Changing Weather and Child Health: Article by Dr. Rushikesh Kute – Pediatrician in Nashik
When the season changes and the drop in warmth, the rise in pollutants produces absolute states for infective people like viruses and bacteria to rise. Allergens and fungi also add to it all.
Respiratory infections, viral and bacterial, allergic bronchitis, asthma, skin allergies, fungal infections, and viral diarrheas, etc. command the scene. These have an impression on children’s health.
Do’s and don’ts:
- Breastfeeding for at least one year to make immunity strong and will be able to deal with infections and allergies.
- Eat plenty of fruits, green vegetables, and a balanced high protein diet.
- Nuts are good for children. But it should be given to children when they are 2+years, because of the risk of choking.
- There should be no limitation in the diet like oranges, yogurt or bananas in cold weather to prevent a child from catching a cold or during a cold.
- Fresh air and sunshine are good for everybody, so for children.
- Outdoor games keep children fit and healthy.
- Do not keep the child’s bedroom too hot or too cold.
- Blowers & Ac’s are drying and can cause dehydration.
- Heating & cooling appliances should not be used 24*7.
- It’s important to bath young babies and children in a warm climate and preferably around noon when it gets warmer.
- Viral respiratory germs are common from October, through winter and early spring transpire regularly and need no antibiotics only supportive treatment is usually enough.
- All vaccinations should be up to date, to prevent vaccine-preventable viral and bacterial infections happening with the change of season or winters.
- Do not over clothe the children. As over clothing with woolens offers no shield against colds or respiratory infections.
- Air the babies regularly throughout the day to give ventilation. A packed, totally covered child will land up with skin and fungal infections. Clothing should be comfortable and easy to wear.
